Young Siddhartha lived in the royal palace of Kapilavastu. His father, King Śuddhodana, built three palaces for him, where music, dance, and feasts filled every season of the year.
Everything was beautiful—almost unreal: silk curtains, the breeze over lotus ponds, the sound of palace maidens playing their lutes.
But late at night, when everyone had fallen asleep, Siddhartha would gaze at the moon alone, feeling an emptiness in his heart that he could not put into words.
