The flow of genetic information is generally that a gene (a piece of DNA) codes for mRNA, which codes for a polypeptide. Folded polypeptides can be proteins, some of which are enzymes. Enzymes are needed to produce all other molecules (like carbs and lipids). Another twist is that some genes code for other types of RNA which are not translated.
