Addendum: here are the other ways to cut the Sailors:
-7/2/4 (the "bonkura" way)
-8/3/2 (the one most people know and the "proper" way, but after cutting swap 2 and 3 to get the sailor to flare out)
You can also cut the sailor however you want. Apparently I've been cutting my sailors wrong all this time (8/2/3) :( I think it's the nicest looking pattern cause it matches the shape of the sailor. #the little details
