Update. I found a loose capacitor inside the flashgun. I soldered it where it belonged with no effect.
I tried putting another capacitor in its place to see what difference it makes, and I could only see that there is now a pattern of sound during the 1-second charging time instead of being continuous. At least we know what changes what.
What are your recommendations from here on?
And WTF got my menu/settings stuck in the first place? They worked well before!
