In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder in 2020, the New York Public Library used action learning to take on the emotive and foundational challenge of safety. CALC Maura Muller led an intensive action learning project involving seven groups meeting for 90 minutes each, to answer questions such as "What is the role of Security at NYPL?”, “How can we keep ourselves safe?” and “How can we keep our patrons safe?”. An objective of this program was to improve communication, which was achieved, in addition to the development of new resources and trainings for staff and security and a reduction in the “us vs them” mindset that had been pervasive in the culture.
