#23 Flow Method Examples | Functional and Conceptual Design
Welcome to 'Functional and Conceptual Design' course ! This lecture provides a deeper understanding of the Flow Method for functional decomposition, previously introduced as the "black box" approach. The lecture emphasizes that this method is particularly well-suited for analyzing complex products with multiple critical paths and intricate flows of materials, energy, and signals. The lecture reinforces the core principles of the Flow Method, where the product is treated as a "black box" with inputs entering and outputs exiting. The internal functions within the product are determined by tracing how the inputs transform into outputs. The lecture illustrates the Flow Method's application through detailed examples, including: Electric Pencil Sharpener: This example demonstrates the identification of inputs (electricity, hand force, pencil) and outputs (sharpened pencil, shavings, noise, vibration), and the subsequent mapping of functions that connect them. Nail Clipper: This example highlights how customer requirements can be incorporated into the decomposition process. Specific customer needs are linked to individual sub-functions within the nail clipper's functional structure, emphasizing the customer-centric approach of the method. Paint Bottling Machine: This example showcases the analysis of a more complex industrial product, demonstrating how the Flow Method can handle intricate processes and multiple input and output flows. Iced Tea Brewer: This example reinforces the application of the Flow Method to products with diverse inputs and outputs, including materials, energy, and signals. The lecture emphasizes the use of a functional common basis – a standardized set of verbs and nouns that describe common functions and flows, ensuring consistency and clarity in the decomposition process.
