'24

"‘24" is a project I started back in July of this year. It is my most personal and vulnerable video/short film I have ever uploaded as I am not playing a character, but myself. Before I left for the UCLA Summer Institute for Film Production in August, my summer was a slow but eventful one all at once. It brought a lot of time to reflect and see how much had changed at home in a year. A year ago I was getting ready to go away to school, which would be my first time away from home - the place where my family, friends, and life had been. Coming back, I realized how much had happened and changed in a year among my relationships with friends and in myself, so rather than bottling it up, I decided to write this short film. The short takes place right after our iconic "Disneyland Vlogs" and tells the story of our friend group changing as certain members leave. My good friend, Jordan Yang, had footage of us after "The Disneyland Vlogs," which was another inspiration for making this short rather than just talking about the footage. I wanted to use these videos in a creative way, so I built the short film around them, which gave them a greater context and insight to what happened after the trip, leading up to both Jordan leaving for the military, and me and my friend, Adan, for school. The footage is integrated in and serves as the foundation of this short. I hope I used it effectively. The short film ultimately serves to show how much change can happen in a year, but also presents the importance of remembering and cherishing memories fondly, and to not let how things are in the present affect your perception of the past. Memories are special to all of us because we only get to live through them once. For those of you new here, this is not a typical MATTYAM release, I usually make comedy sketches. I will obviously return to those, as I have one ready, but I needed to tell a more mature story. The whole point of my channel is to see the progression and abilities of me as a storyteller/filmmaker. After going to UCLA in August, I would definitely do some things differently, but this was made before that so it’s all apart of the process! I hope you enjoy and find some sort of message/meaning in my brand new short film, "‘24." Today also marks one year since I left home, so it is the perfect day to release it.
