Bridge tacks are sometimes used on stainless pipe to avoid having to purge before tack welding.
A bridge tack does not penetrate the sharp part of the bevel.
Bridge tacks are not always permitted.
Penetrated tacks are when the tack weld fully penetrates and breaks down the sharp edges of a bevel and for stainless pipe, purging with argon is a necessary step to avoid granulation aka sugaring.
