This video talks about the different arithmetic operations that are possible on integers including binary addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and bit shift operations. The idea behind this video is to talk about the relative complexity of operations and show that not all mathematical operations have the same level of complexity. It also sheds light on the power of "power of 2" numbers, and sometimes the dark side of it too, if not careful. In the end, the video emphasizes the need to not left efficiency drive programming, but rather clean and understandable code. They both have their advantages, their areas of usage where they absolutely shine, and they both fall short or completely fail in other aspects. There is no one over the other. As audio and DSP enthusiasts, you'd need to know what where a particular format is preferred and under what circumstances they fall short. Why do digital playback hardware prefer fixed point number format. Why do DAW softwares prefer to work with floating point numbers? What even is a double precision number? And what number format do you use when implementing a DSP algorithm. The series will address these questions and a lot more. If you've got any questions, suggestions or recommendations, type them out here, or send me a message on any of my social channels mentioned below.
