You don't need a 3D scanner to reverse-engineer complex parts.
In this video, I reverse-engineer three components using nothing but a Sharpie, a caliper, and a 2D scanner. Each component gets harder. The first one is flat and takes seconds. The second is a fully functional aperture mechanism. The third is cylindrical with geometry that wraps around the surface.
I made a bet with Fabian at 3D Labs: if all three 3D prints match the originals, I get free studio time for a year. If not, I owe him an advertisement.
Tools used:
- Sharpie
- Digital caliper
- 2D flatbed scanner
- SOLIDWORKS (Wrap feature for cylindrical geometry)
- 3D printer (PLA)
