300 Year Old Bonsai Repot
In this Bonsai video we are repotting a 300 year old oriental hornbeam bonsai tree, hoisting it into the air before planting it into its new pot. This Oriental Hornbeam Bonsai Tree was originally collected from the wild in Croatia and is estimated to be 200-400 years old. It has spent the last three years recovering and establishing itself in its training pot. During that time it has been styled three times by Attila. Now that it is properly established, the time has finally come to move it into a beautiful circular glazed bonsai pot. Oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis) is a smaller leafed and often more compact species than the European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) which makes it a fantastic species for Bonsai. It has fine branches, shorter internodes and a naturally denser look than European hornbeam, which tends to have larger leaves. European hornbeam is usually more vigorous and easier to grow strongly. Compared to Korean hornbeam (Carpinus turczaninowii), oriental hornbeam can look somewhat similar in refinement, but Korean hornbeam is often more sought after for even better ramification, attractive flaky bark with age and its excellent autumn colours!
