Soviet forces have invaded Finland, advancing from the Karelian Isthmus and the Arctic, splitting the country and severing north–south communications. A Jääkäri battalion, having avoided encirclement, conducts a fighting withdrawal toward the western interior and now operates within 18–31 miles of the Swedish border.
