A brief description of a 3d probe idea I've been toying around with for a while, used for finding a datum of a part on a 3 axis CNC milling machine.
UPDATE: This general design looks pretty common, however, one problem I can't solve, and I don't see other designs solving is ensuring the axis of the stylus will return to a concentric position after touching a face, and ensuring that the axis is colinear with the axis of the body.
I'm thinking a piezo with an op-amp and some electronic filtering might be a better option. A 'bump' (or any minute strain) of the stylus can be amplified and sent to the controller.
