Cholesterol is a fundamental part of the cell membranes of all animal cells. Evolution has added roles for cholesterol. It is a precursor for many hormones as well as vitamin D. It is secreted by our skin and serves as a protection. Cholesterol may be an antioxidant. But the primary purpose is to control the fluidity of animal cell membranes. This video gives a simplified overview of this pretty ordinary fatty molecule. A hopefully subtle theme is that our bodies may be designed for a more vegetarian diet. My research has given me a pretty deep and thorough understanding of this subject. It was with great care and thought that I narrowed it down to this video. If there is a take-home lesson, it is this; The liver dumps extra cholesterol into the intestine in the form of bile. A diet that is high in fiber will help push this cholesterol out in the feces and prevent it from becoming reabsorbed. I hope this video is considered worthwhile. I used "Fats that Kill and Fats that Heal" by Erasmus Udo as well as the usual Internet sources; Wikipedia etc. Appreciation to the sources of the many images I used. Thanks. The original three dimensional image is from Chimera software. I put the model against a greenscreen background. Hard information: a human has about 50 grams of cholesterol A human recycles maybe 1 gram a day. 25% of the cholesterol is made in the liver, the rest in individual cells. Cholesterol is not soluble in blood, blood being a water, hydrophilic environment. This and all fats are transported in little capsules that hold the fat on the inside, surrounded by specialized proteins, called lipoproteins such that the capsules are hydrophilic and dissolve in the blood. This is where the language HDL, LDL and VLDL comes from. All lipids are transported this way. The metabolism and control of synthesis have been thoroughly studied and are well understood. Two Nobel prizes have been awarded: 1964 Bloch and Lynen mechanism and regulation of Cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism 1985 Brown and Goldstein signaling pathway (from Wikipedia)
