4th Grade Math 4.9, Model Division with Regrouping
We can use base 10 blocks to model division with regrouping. We can use tens and ones to model the dividend. We divide the tens, and regroup if necessary, then divide the ones. We write any leftover ones as the remainder. We divide the tens into equal groups first because any leftover tens, that won't fit into the groups equally, can be regrouped as ones and put into the equal groups. Sometimes more than one ten will have to be broken apart into ones when regrouping. If we share the ones first, we add an extra step to the model, it will take longer to solve. It's more efficient to share the tens first. Whenever the dividend is not a multiple of the divisor, we will have a remainder. We review the meaning of multiples. Instead of using base 10 blocks, we can draw quick pictures to represent longs of 10s and units of 1s. We use higher order thinking skills to solve a division problem in two different ways. We decide which model makes sense, and which model is nonsense for a given division problem. 4th Grade Math 4.2, Remainders, When Whole Numbers Don't Divide Evenly https://youtu.be/u5B-f6-UM8I 4th Grade Math 4.7, Divide Using Repeated Subtraction https://youtu.be/zJNYb5hb5QE 4th Grade Math 4.8, Divide Using Partial Quotients https://youtu.be/K-nSEH-y6CQ 4th Grade Math Playlist (2015) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKi4WTp6PRGX7RhcxctRibNb7V091JZfn I'm using the Houghton Mifflin Go Math! 2015 copyright textbook for this playlist.
