I’m Erika with Target Test Prep, and today I walk through 5 of the most common GRE Verbal wrong answer traps that appear across all GRE Verbal question types. You’ll learn how each trap answer works in different contexts so you can spot and avoid them in practice and on test day. These traps look different across RC, CR-style RC, TC, and SE, but the underlying logic is the same. Opposite answers flip the meaning of the correct answer. Almost Right answers contain one extra word or idea that breaks the meaning. Too Extreme answers push the idea further than the passage supports. Wrong Part of the Passage answers pull from a place in the text that doesn’t match the question. Not in the Passage answers introduce ideas that feel reasonable but aren’t actually stated. I also explain why these traps work so well and how they use tone, intensity, subtle wording shifts, and real-world knowledge to mislead you. When you know how they show up, it becomes much easier to avoid them and stay focused on answers that actually match the passage.
