The movement known as British Empiricism became a bit more radical with the philosophical apologetics of George Berkeley, who, in an attempt to affirm the existence of God, found it necessary to deny the existence of matter. Though his philosophy did not gain much traction, it did form an important link between the rather 'common sense' philosophy of John Locke, and the much more radical and skeptical philosophy of David Hume.
