I came up with this method with a lot of influence for my physics professors in college. One problem we see all the time is we get these straight A math students who have a C in physics and they're freaking out. The reason they were able to do so well in their math class is because they’ve learned to follow a set of steps to get from point A to point B, much like following a recipe. Even in their more challenging math classes they were able to learn more steps and get to the solution. Then comes the day when they enter their first physics class. There are no steps to follow in physics. Many students will stare at a problem trying to “figure it out” on their own, thinking sheer intelligence will get them through the physics problem. It won’t. Many physics students will spend hours on a problem like a good student should but get nothing in return for their efforts. Our 8 step method for solving physics problems gives the recipe back to the student. That way they can tap into the part of them that was so successful in their math classes and apply it to physics problems. Instead of focusing on figuring out the problem, focus on the steps.
