909 kicks are different than techno, house, or psy trance kicks because they're essentially all body with no attack. That's why most EDM producers get them wrong. And after 9 years of struggling myself, I finally cracked it.
For years I struggled like everyone else, trying to make 909s fit my standard kick method and wondering why they never sounded right. I kept following the same Pro-MB thresholds but 909s are fundamentally different.
Here's the truth: 909 kicks are all body with no attack. So they can't hit the standard Pro-MB targets. The 0-150Hz band needs -2dB below threshold (like psy trance kicks), not +6dB like other kicks. This is because 909s are mostly boom.
In this video, I walk you through my exact process for making a 909 kick at 126 BPM. I show every setting, every pitch envelope point, and the specific Pro-MB targets that make 909s work.
Most producers guess and over process, while I'm using the correct frequency targets with zero guesswork, achieving that iconic dark, boomy 909 character every time.
