(17 Jan 1992) RR9203A MOZAMBIQUE: SILENT WAR DURATION: 6 MINUTES 46 SECONDS ENGLISH SPEECH: 52 SECONDS / SENNA SPEECH 28 SECONDS STORY: The Marxist Frelimo Party won independence for Mozambique from the colonial Portugese in 1975 after eleven years of war. Almost immediately afterwards, the right-wing group Renamo launched a vicious guerrilla war aginst the communist government, which has cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians and driven millions more from their homes. But while no ceasefire has yet been signed, Frelimo has ended its system of one-party rule. And now it has been agreed to hold presidential elections in 1993.
