By modifying a microwave oven transformer into a high current AC power supply, we can resistively heat up a graphite rod to extremely high temperatures. With the right design, this can be used as a small-scale metal melting crucible capable of melting metals with high melting points.
In this video, I successfully melt a small sample of nickel metal, though some planned tweaks to the design should allow it to get much hotter.
