A Level Ethics Theme 1A Divine Command Theory
A Level Ethics Theme 1A made using my notes on 1A Eduqas Ethics A level and Notebook LM for the video The video explores Divine Command Theory, a meta-ethical framework asserting that moral rightness is defined solely by the will of God. This perspective emphasizes that because God is omnipotent, He serves as the ultimate source and regulator of objective ethical truths. Central to the discussion is the Euthyphro dilemma, which questions whether actions are good because God approves of them or if God approves of them because they are inherently good. To address criticisms regarding the potential arbitrariness of divine whims, philosopher Robert Adams proposed a modified version rooted in God’s omnibenevolence, suggesting morality stems from an unchanging, loving nature. However, the sources also highlight significant challenges, such as the pluralism objection arising from conflicting religious interpretations and the concern that following commands out of fear undermines true moral character.
