In today’s video, I discuss a recent paper published in Current Psychology titled “Brave New World” or not?: A mixed-methods study of the relationship between second language writing learners’ perceptions of ChatGPT, behaviors of using ChatGPT, and writing proficiency. This study explores how L2 writing learners perceive ChatGPT, how they actually use it, and whether their use of ChatGPT is related to writing proficiency, especially in terms of complexity, accuracy, and fluency. What makes this paper especially interesting is its mixed-methods design: it combines survey data, writing samples, and focus group interviews to examine both statistical patterns and learners’ lived experiences. In this video, I walk through the main ideas of the paper, including how performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and facilitating conditions shape students’ use of ChatGPT. I also reflect on one important finding: ChatGPT use significantly predicted writing complexity, but not all aspects of writing proficiency. Finally, I discuss what this study suggests for AI-assisted L2 writing instruction, especially the need to balance technological support with human agency, critical evaluation, and teacher guidance.
