First grade readers are matched in partnerships with people at similar reading levels. These first graders are meeting in reading partnership following their learned and practiced routine. Partner 1 reads aloud to partner 2, then retells his story, followed by naming the theme. The routine is then repeated in the same order with partner 2 reading aloud to partner 1. Readers know they continue to repeat this procedure for partnership meetings until the teacher calls them back together for share time. Partners may read and talk about multiple books from their book bag or bin.
