A Tiny Capsule, A Lower Risk_
Women who’ve had a spontaneous preterm birth once often ask, “Will it happen again?” A new multicenter trial suggests an unexpected ally: probiotics. In high‑risk women, early pregnancy probiotics containing Clostridium butyricum and others were linked to fewer recurrent preterm births than expected from national data (around the mid‑teens vs 22%+). Retrospective studies showed recurrence dropping from ~30% to ~10–14% with similar probiotics, especially when started before 14 weeks’ gestation. Probiotics may work by reshaping the gut microbiome, boosting regulatory T cells, and calming inflammation that can trigger early labour. This isn’t practice‑changing yet—no RCT—but it’s a big step toward microbiome‑based preterm birth prevention. Would you consider probiotics in a future pregnancy trial? PPP Trial Group.
