After the death of her husband, Hyrum Smith—who was killed alongside his brother Joseph Smith in the Murder of Joseph Smith in 1844—Mary Fielding Smith chose faith and courage instead of fear. Determined to gather with the Saints and travel west, she faced the journey largely on her own. With her young son Joseph F. Smith beside her and expecting another child, she crossed the plains despite illness, hardship, and uncertainty.
