Abaqus CAE - Resonance testing on pipe
This video shows a simulation of a full scale resonance testing of a pipe. This is part of a study done on fatigue resonance testing to analyze and predict by FEA the high cycle fatigue damage and failure. This test consists in a rotating mass (50kg) exciting the first bending mode of the pipe, while the pipe is rest on supports and it is not rotating. The applied masses at pipe ends are about 250Kg each, the pipe is a OD10"x20mm. The resonance rotational speed (106rad/s) has been derived by the natural frequency (17Hz) calculated by modal analysis. The rotating mass generates a centrifugal force of F=m*w^2*r which is a very high force generating the bending of the pipe and the resonance effect. In this working condition the fatigue cycles are applied in short time and the failure is reached fastly (few hours), others fatigue tests would require too much time in particular in the high cycles fatigue field.
