Ableton Live Drum Rack: Creating Your Own Samples

In this video I’ll show you how to create your own custom drum kit using Ableton’s Drum Rack, which I have loaded on my first MIDI track. Then, you’ll learn how to resample sounds in Ableton Live from your favorite soft synths. To begin, I’ve gone into arrangement view and to an open MIDI track. On this track I’ve loaded one of my favorite soft synths, the Arturia Modular V. Along with being a fantastic recreation of the famous Moog classic modular system, it is also very CPU friendly, so the synth won’t slow your computer down. This is a massive sounding synth that is so versatile for creating just about any sound you can imagine. I’ve been working on a kick patch and I’m using my Arturia Beatstep for my drum controller. I’ll enable my track and then you can hear me tweaking the Modular V. Now, I am ready to record a few takes of my drum kick. Our process will be to record a MIDI note that is triggering the Modular V, then take the audio from the Modular V and resample it has audio onto another track. Let’s record our MIDI. And now we want to resample that audio. So I am going to go to an open audio track and assign the output of the Modular V to the input of the track. Now that we have made the correct routings, let’s bounce that to track three. We have a nice audio sample, so the next thing we want to do is save that sample. And we can do that by saving the sample into our user library. All we need do is drag and drop the audio to our library. And we can name the sample if we want. Let’s now drop that into our Drum Rack, remember to put the track into record standby so you hear your audio. And I have that sample assigned to this pad on my Beatstep. I’m going to create some more drum samples using what we’ve learned so I have a complete drum groove. I have recorded, saved, and assign my drum new drum samples onto these pads of the Beatstep. And I have created this drum kit and recorded this beat.
