ACE A-level Physics Synoptic Questions: AI Tips & Mindset Shift
Synoptic assessment is one of the most challenging aspects of A-level physics. This video provides tips on how to prepare for synoptic questions, by: (i) explaining what synoptic assessment is (by way of an example question); (ii) discussing the key change in mindset needed to negotiate synoptic questions; (iii) outlining steps you can take to prepare, including trying papers from other exam boards, and using AI models such as ChatGPT to generate practice questions. We also mention some ideas and best practices from the cognitive sciences that naturally arise in the process of preparing for synoptic questions. 0:00 Intro 0:34 Outline 1:16 What is synoptic assessment (SA)? 1:53 Example of a synoptic question 3:27 Other forms of synoptic assessment 4:29 Change of mindset: view specification as a network rather than linearly 6:11 How to prepare for synoptic assessment? 6:40 'Blocking' versus 'interleaving' 7:28 Use ALL available resources (papers from other exam boards, exam practice workbooks,....) 9:10 Generative AI models for extra synoptic preparation 9:47 ChatGPT 3.5 question and answer generation discussion 12:34 Usefulness and flaws of large language models for synoptic preparation 13:38 Consolidation results in initial learnt contexts of concepts fading away, and only the meaning of concepts remaining 15:23 Outro The example synoptic question discussed is based on question 4 from this worksheet (originally set in AQA PHYA4/2 Jan 2011): https://umutech.net/MagneticII.pdf 'Linking Concepts in Pre-University Physics': https://isaacphysics.org/books/linking_concepts?stage=all ChatGPT: https://openai.com/chatgpt/
