Activating background knowledge with relational reasoning (KWL alternative)

In this short video, I introduce a different method of priming student background knowledge that uses relational reasoning that encourages students to go beyond traditional personal connections to a text, encouraging deeper integration of information gleaned from reading a text. This research was pulled from the study "Prompting Rural Students' Use of Background Knowledge and Experience to Support Comprehension of Unfamiliar Content" by Courtney Hattan, published in Reading Research Quarterly Vol 54, Number 4.
