There are several levels of listening. Literally it means detecting and analysing sound waves with our ears and brains.
Active listening means that you give your attention to the sender of the message. Pro-active listening is all about clearly defining what you want to find out through thorough preparation.
In this video you will get a number of techniques to improve your active listening skills. Because active listening is of the utmost importance. It can help clear up misunderstandings, allows you to get to know the other person better, discover why the other person is objecting, show your good intentions to eventually come to an agreement.
Active listening starts by being attentive to the other person. A large part of that is done with body language: eye contact, nodding (not excessively, it might be perceived as impatience), humming (hum-hum from time to time), stimulating gestures, etc.
Active listening works better if you ask open questions (not yes or no questions). In fact you can never go wrong when you use WH-questions: who, what, where, why, when and how.
