Active vs. Passive DI Box: A Sound/Level Comparison Please Subscribe to my Channel for more like this / See my use case for DI boxes below Here we have the Behringer Ultra-DI DI20 Active DI Box in comparison to the Whirlwind Director Passive DI Box. My Solo Acoustic setup requires a DI box to manage connections for my portable speaker, floor monitor, and a venue’s house sound system simultaneously. In this video I'm using a small/portable Yamaha Stagepas 200 speaker that has a mixer built in with 1 1/4" output. I needed a DI box in order to send the Main mix from my small speaker to 2 additional locations 1) My floor monitor 2) A venue's house system via XLR mic cable. I am running a 1/4" cable from the Yamaha Stagepas Monitor output into the input of these DI boxes and using the link/passthru output to send another 1/4" cable to my floor monitor. Lastly I am running an XLR cable from the output of each DI box to the XLR input of a venue (restaurant/bar) system. I wanted to compare the volume and sound quality of Active and Passive DI Boxes. I used the Active Behringer Ultra-DI DI20 DI box at a gig recently and had the Attenuation set to -40db and the house sound person didn't need more gain from me. This makes me believe that a Passive DI box is all I will really need for this type of smaller setup. Remember that an Active DI box requires a power source like a 9v battery, 9v adapter, or 48v phantom power. A Passive DI box doesn't require an external power source.
