In the CAD system, automatically produce the bolt hole pattern using a linear sketch pattern. Try it. • Start with the file resulting from Activity 2.19. Save it as being specific to Activity 2.20. • Edit the sketch that defines the bolt holes. Delete all bolt hole circles except the one in the top left quadrant. To delete a sketch entity, select the entity, right click, and delete. • Using the remaining circle, create the bolt hole pattern using the linear sketch pattern command (the other option, which is not useful here, is the circular sketch pattern). Follow the prompts in feature manager, and in the message box in the bottom left of the screen. • Notice the direction option in the feature manager. See the reference coordinate system in the bottom left of the screen to understand where the x and y directions are. • Create a pattern in both the x and the y directions. Flip direction (e.g., -y) if needed. Zoom out and observe the preview (yellow geometry) to understand what the computer is planning to do relative to pattern direction. • Finish the part by finishing the pattern of bolt holes. • Save the part as being unique to Activity 2.20. This video accompanies the book Introduction to Mechanical Design with CAD by Christopher A. Mattson. It is a tutorial for Solidworks 2020-2021 edition.
