Actors have to always strive to gain an advantage over the competition. Having a solid background is very important for the over all quality of your auditions. A curtain works but having a nice big space behind you painted will give you more flexibility when filming your auditions.
Pro Tip: You will want to use a flat finish so that no light reflects off of it. Two colours are recommended by casting directors and they are a neutral grey or a neutral blue. Remember that a simple shade of these colours is what you want as it's not the feature of the audition. You want to be exactly what it is and that is a background.
