Stabilizer/Condition in your pool's chemistry is responsible for protecting the chlorine from the Sun's ultraviolet rays. Just as the name implies, it "stabilizes" chlorine levels. This is much more important in the Summer, imho or if your pool is in direct sunlight. There are two types of condition, one is in fluid form and the other in crystals or pebbles. I use the dry kind. The key is to have this stuff dissolve in the pool. You CANNOT just dump it in the pool or it will sit there for a while being ugly. You CAN put it in the skimmer but then you will have filtration restrictions until it dissolves plus you will not be able to clean your filter until it dissolves or you will waste it.
What I do is use a SOCK (or two). Put the stuff in the sock and you can either just toss it in the pool (it will dissolve in a week or so) or hang it in the skimmer like I did. This stuff is acidic, so don't leave it on your hands for any length of time and don't eat it or rub it into your eyes. Silly.
