Get physical base ten blocks that are easy for students to use and perfect for hands-on learning here: https://amzn.to/4pN3Z2X 3.6 + 1.8 For decimals, I’ll use flats for wholes (ones), rods for tenths, and units for hundredths. For 3.6, I’ll place 3 flats and 6 rods. For 1.8, I’ll add 1 flat and 8 rods. Now let’s add. In the tenths place, 6 rods plus 8 rods is 14 tenths. With the blocks, I'll regroup 10 tenths into 1 flat and move that flat into the ones place, leaving 4 rods behind. At the same time, on paper, I’ll write 6 plus 8 equals 14. I'll record the 4 in the tenths place and regroup the 1 into the ones place. Now in the ones place, we have 3 flats plus 1 flat plus the regrouped flat, which makes 5. On paper, that matches as well. So the sum is 5.4. Notice how each regrouping step with the blocks lines up perfectly with the written method. This makes the connection clear between what’s happening with the manipulatives and what’s happening on paper. Want More Practice?
