A Military Skills Instructor (MSI) is responsible for preparing newly enlisted men and women for service in the Royal Australian Air Force. Over a nine‑week course held at No. 1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU) at RAAF Base Wagga Wagga, MSIs teach recruits basic military skills, including weapon handling, military drill, field craft, and academic lessons designed to prepare recruits for service life. To prepare for the role, prospective MSIs complete a Military Skills Instructor Course, which teaches them all the components required to instruct the next generation of Air Force personnel, including how to manage complex situations related to recruit administration.
