This video gives a brief overview of the design of composite structures in fire, using the Slab Panel Method (SPM) or Tensile Membrane Behaviour. It is shown that through a good understanding of the behaviour of composite steel-concrete systems at high temperature economic layouts which save money on passive protection can be produced. This work forms part of the Stellenbosch University's Fire Engineering Research Unit (FireSUN) postgraduate program in fire engineering. This work was generously supported by the Lloyd's Register Foundation (UK) under the "Fire Engineering Education For Africa" grant. The Lloyd’s Register Foundation helps to protect life and property by supporting engineering-related education, public engagement and the application of research [http://www.lrfoundation.org.uk].
