A very windy day is underway across California, with gusty conditions showing up along the coast, through the Bay Area, across the Central Valley, and into parts of the interior. Ocean Beach is a great example today — sand blowing, rough surf, and that classic springtime California wind machine fully turned on. The biggest concern today is fire weather. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for parts of the Central Valley and surrounding areas, where strong winds, dry fuels, and low humidity can help any fire start move quickly. There have already been a few fire starts, and so far firefighters have been able to stay on top of them — but this is one of those days to keep your eyes open. Avoid anything that could spark a fire, especially in windy grassland areas. Along the coast and offshore waters, conditions are rough as well, with gale warnings and even storm warnings in place for parts of the marine zones. That means dangerous ocean conditions for boaters, fishermen, and beachgoers, with powerful winds and rough seas. We also check showers near Alturas and far northeastern California, but for most of the state the main story is wind today, then a warmer pattern building in tomorrow and through the next few days. The good news: the strongest winds should begin to back off. There will still be some windy spots and advisories into Monday, but the overall trend is for the wind to ease while temperatures climb. Today’s video includes live views from windy Ocean Beach, National Weather Service watches and warnings, satellite imagery, computer models showing the wind gradually abating, California today and tomorrow forecasts, U.S. travel weather, air quality checks, and the full California north-to-south live camera tour — plus Nature Snaps at the end.
