These are tests that we do to dive speed which is 120% of the published maximum operating speed of the airplane. We’re looking to do two things with these tests. First we're showing that the airplane is free of flutter up to dive speed. Flutter, as you may recall, is a potentially catastrophic interaction of structural, inertial, and aerodynamic effects that cause large oscillations in the structure. We're also looking to show that the airplane flight characteristics are safe at high speed to allow a pilot of average skill and strength to recover to normal operation. These are the riskiest tests that we do in flight, and as a result we spend months and sometimes years doing ground test analysis and design review so that when we actually go to do these tests they’re demonstrations not explorations. Because of the risk involved and the implications for flight safety we spend a lot of time preparing for these tests and take precautions very seriously as we're conducting them.
