Here's my Akai S950 in action, in a recording session involving an Atari ST computer, a desk and a multitrack machine - no OS in sight!
This is how it used to be done, before the computer recording revolution. It enables a different way of working - fewer possibilities for audio editing necessitating careful playing, tuning, etc..
The time taken for things to load, and rewinding/fast forwarding mean there are breathing spaces in a session to think about what to do next..
0:00 - intro
0:54 - adding a multitrack recorder into the Atari/sampler dynamic! Adding a MIDI merge box
2:07 - recording a bass part to multitrack while the computer controls the sampler drums
4:08 - recording guitar, miking a Roland JC-120 chorus amp in stereo
6:02 - machines that do one job each to contribute to the whole.
