Alton's Piasa Caves

The locals know about the old mine caves sprinkled throughout Alton, Illinois. Just north of downtown at the Piasa bird mural roadside attraction, there is an unofficial trail that goes through the woods to a hidden gem. Visitors have entered these caves at their own risk. I do not recommend it for safety and legal reasons, but you will do what you want to do. The entry gate on one of the front openings is unsecured and there are multiple entrances in the rear of the site where one can view inside the old mine caves. Some folks have entered these caves and explored around. There’s a waterfall at the back cave area. The inside of the caves contain 30 plus foot ceilings, rock trimmings on the ground, pools of 50-60 degree temperature water inside the mine caves, and the potential for risks including bats, strangers, falling rocks, and ceiling collapses. Another path along the nearby truck lot goes out to a small pond on the property. The area is pretty wooded and would be even more difficult to navigate in the warmer months due to all the overgrowth. Homeless people and questionable folks may be doing other things at the property, so exercise due caution around this place. You never know what visitors are lurking around. It’s a beautiful place. It’s kinda neat enough to view from the outside alone. If you go inside, that’s completely up to you. I’m not advocating it, as YouTube is strict about that sort of thing.
