AMAZING GRACE

Titus 2:11 - KJV “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.” God's grace, or unmerited favor, has been revealed in the form of Jesus Christ, providing salvation for everyone who believes. Salvation is a gift, not something earned, and is available to all, regardless of background or past actions. The hymn "Amazing Grace" is about redemption, the joy of receiving God's grace, even when you have done terrible things. It was written almost two and a half centuries ago in 1772. The words for the beloved song were borne from the heart, mind and experiences of the Englishman John Newton. Prior to his life as an ordained minister, he was a slave trader. He had a near-death experience on one of the slave ships. During a violent storm, Newton prayed desperately to God to save him and his ship from sinking. Many were swept overboard, but Newton was spared, and the ship reached safety. He marked this event as his moment of conversion to Christianity which set him on a path towards redemption. Knowing this story of John Newton's life and the journey he went through before writing this hymn helps us understand the depth of his words and his gratefulness for God's truly amazing grace.
