This one started off with a recording of Schubert's Andante from his Sonata in A, and the wheels quickly fell off the tracks. For the first version I slowed it way down, ran it through a granular synth, did various things that made it sound worse. Mid project I chopped it up and selected the pieces that still sounded the most musical, but that just made it more ponderous and muddy. Later in the project I sampled the original first piano chord and used that to play a counter-melody. Then turning off the original I layered on other instruments, repeating the process of turning off the layer that inspired the current melody line before going onto the next iteration. The result was like a game of telephone, each layer informing the next while wandering away from the original idea. Eventually swapping parts of the original layers back in, judiciously applying EQ and fader movements. Sound Toys Space Bender, Glitch Machines' Hysteresis, and no drums this time.
