The catalysts for this building's construction were two fires that devasted the Charleston. One in 1740, that also consumed the Dock Street Theatre (see here: https://youtu.be/q0-W4rptAzs ). And the other was in 1778.
After the building's construction, the city of Charleston would see two more great fires burn through town but the Fireproof Building lived up to its name and survived those fires in 1838 and 1861.
Today, the Fireproof Building is home to the South Caroline Historical Society and is open to the public!
