An Experiment in Equal-Value Colors

This painting gave me a chance to explore a number of color theory things. First, based on some of the comments on previous videos in this series on equal-value colored paints, I thought I'd explore the importance of lighting. I attempted to capture the painting's colors under the same type of light used to define the lightness of my paints. In color science, there are a number of specified illuminants, including D65, based on diffuse daylight - and that's the standard I used when measuring paint swatches. in this video, I used diffuse daylight to light the painting and set the AWB on my camera to 6500K. With the values of the colors matching pretty well, I was able to show a couple other effects: the slight darkening of my mixtures predicted by subtractive mixing, and the perceptual phenomenon of mach bands. #colortheory #abstractart #artandscience #steameducation
