An introduction into viruses
An introduction into viruses Viruses are tiny and uncomplicated obligate pathogens. They don't need to be complex because they hijack the complex physiology of their host cell. How to categorize viruses and where they came from is still hotly debated. In this video I give an introduction into viruses including discussing how they might have evolved, how do we subcategorize them, and I describe some of the basic anatomy and lifecycles of these mysterious entities. Learning objectives Describe the relative size and complexity of viruses Explain how these pathogens are able to be so uncomplex Describe how we subcategorize viruses by their type of genetic material, protective structures (containers), genetic similarity and lifecycles. Give examples of these differences using the viruses which cause the common cold Discuss the three main hypotheses for the origin of viruses Discuss whether or not viruses are a clade and explain how this is relevant to the development of selectively toxic drugs which can target all viruses.
