Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict of incredible strength and character, who is perused by the relentless police inspector Javert. Against all odds, Valjean becomes a wealthy businessman, and becomes the foster father to Cosette, and exploited orphan. Through a strange twist of fate, Javert is put on his trail, and Valjean becomes a fugitive again, taking Cosette with him into hiding. Cosette becomes the center of his life. He is unprepared for the dramatic events that follow when she falls in love with the aristocrat Marius. Again Valjean is swept up in the ride of events as his determination and courage take him to the front lines of the revolution in the streets. This sweeping epic, which spans forty of the most exciting years in France's history, takes us from the prison galleys, to the barricades of civil war, from the sewers of Paris to the ballrooms of the rich and powerful.
