"Anime WW2" and its Consequences

Everyone's seen Valkyria Chronicles and maybe even laughed it off as "Anime WW2," but I think it's got a hold of something genuine. It's a series sampling directly from our own history, but blurs the setting with sickly-sweet aesthetics and abstracted conflicts. In spite of that, it makes inspiring use of its visuals and its own medium to say something true and beautiful about people. It's also got pigs with wings and a few other choice elements that slice through the relatively grounded setting.
