Working your ankles to tolerate load at the end ranges of plantar flexion requires more than merely doing calve raises. Understanding some basic anatomy will help you be more deliberate with your training. In this video, I talk about the role of the Tibialis Posterior and Fibularis Longus in stabilizing the ankle joint at end-range plantar flexion and how you can begin to train them. By the end of the video, you should be able to isolate these two muscles and understand how to position them at their fully lengthened and shortened position. From there, you can begin to apply other kinds of loads such as PAILs, RAILs, or passive range holds. Couple this with ankle CARs too for a simple but effective way to expand your workspace and train these often neglected tissues.
